A Dilemma of Choice

It's not uncommon for someone today to say "I'm bored". Oftentimes, people say so without thinking. So then a question begs an answer: What is boredom? A lot of people would say that it's the state of lacking things to do. Yet in this day and age, lacking things to do seems like such an absurd idea.

A valid answer to the question would be "A state of mind". Why? From smartphones, personal computers, tablets, and other gadgets, we can do a lot of things. One can play games, write, read, or watch movies. Heck, even just logging on to the internet is one offered a lot to do. Take note that these are things that one can do indoors. A lot can still be done outdoors, with or without technology. With that in mind, saying that boredom is but a state of mind does actually sound valid.

Saying that boredom is a state of mind, though, implies something. It's that we impose it on ourselves. We do so because in our free time, we tend to do only things that we are familiar with. We end up in a somewhat stagnated state, afraid of stepping out of our comfort zones to find new things to do. If only we had learned to step out and expand our horizons, then we would probably be happy -- or at the very least, content -- with our mundane lives. Instead we choose to confine ourselves to our friends' endless streams.
